Building Compassionate Dementia-Inclusive Communities: A Multi-Sector Initiative
April 2, 2025
As the number of Canadians diagnosed with dementia continues to rise, the need has never been greater for inclusive, compassionate community support. The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association is happy to be a knowledge partner on a multi-sectoral initiative aimed at building capacity, reducing stigma, and enhancing quality of life in community both for individuals with dementia and their care partners.
Led by a research team from the University of British Columbia-Okanagan (UBC-O) under the direction of Dr. Barb Pesut, this project draws from and mobilizes the expertise of three key social health movements—Compassionate Communities, Dementia-Friendly Communities, and Volunteer Navigation (Nav-CARE)—a national training program equipping communities with volunteers who can help navigate resources, and access support for people with dementia to stay engaged and included. Their efforts ensure no one faces dementia alone.
With a contribution from Health Canada, six Canadian organizations are working together to develop, implement, and evaluate innovative programs. The research team has designed a comprehensive toolkit to help communities launch and sustain their efforts. This knowledge product (the toolkit) provides practical resources and strategies for fostering social connection, facilitating meaningful conversations, and tailoring programs to local needs.
A key component of this initiative is the role of community leadership. Partner organizations are establishing leadership teams that collaborate with advisory boards composed of community members—including individuals living with dementia and their care partners. These advisory groups will help design and implement community-driven interventions that address the unique needs of their regions.
Over the next year, this initiative will generate critical insights into how compassionate, dementia-inclusive communities can improve the quality of life for aging individuals. By prioritizing meaningful social engagement and community-driven support, this work is shaping a more inclusive society—one where everyone can thrive, regardless of their stage of life.
CHPCA is honored to support and share this vital work, recognizing the profound impact that connection, compassion, and community can have on the lives of those living with dementia and their loved ones. Together, we can build a future where dignity, inclusion, and care are at the heart of every community.
