About The Palliative Approach

The Palliative Approach, a blog hosted and edited by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association, provides relevant and thought-provoking palliative care content for hospice palliative care professionals, volunteers, and supporters, as well as health care workers, and caregivers across Canada. It features articles in English and French on the latest research, innovative programs and initiatives, professional and personal experiences, and on building stronger support for palliative care in every community. 

The Palliative Approach blog is the evolution of AVISO, CHPCA’s member-only magazine that was published semi-annually from 1992 to 2022. To everyone who supported, contributed, read, and shared AVISO over these 30 years, and especially to CHPCA members – thank you for continuously elevating the important work in hospice palliative care in Canada. We hope your voices will carry on with us as we embark on a new journey with The Palliative Approach!

History of AVISO

CHPCA, founded in 1991, published its first printed semi-annual member newsletter “AVISO” in June 1992. Over 30 years, AVISO evolved and adapted as hospice palliative care and CHPCA grew and changed, moving from a printed and mailed newsletter, to a digital publication sent by email. It became an important tool to help foster connection between CHPCA members – both professionals and volunteers – to keep them informed of exciting initiatives all over the country, to share wisdom and knowledge with one another, and to explore new frontiers in care together.  

CHPCA published 91 editions of AVISO between June 1992 and November 2022, with hundreds of articles from countless contributors and CHPCA members. We are very proud of the high-quality, heart-warming, enlightening, and beautiful stories and knowledge that contributors entrusted us to share with their fellow CHPCA members for three decades. 

As we all know well, all good things must eventually come to an end. To give place to a new CHPCA publication, AVISO is being transformed and given a new name. It leaves an important legacy that we hope to honour in CHPCA’s new open-access, online, bilingual publication (also known as a blog): The Palliative Approach, launching in Fall 2023.
