Palliative Care for Patients with Dementia – presented by Mary Schulz & Michael Gordon

Alzheimer’s disease and other progressive dementias are chronic diseases that have a terminal phase like many other chronic diseases; consequently, people with dementia can benefit from a palliative approach to care. However, individuals, families and health care providers have many misconceptions about the meaning of and implications of palliative care, active versus comfort care and the applicability of this approach in the care of people living with dementia. This webinar will engage health care providers in learning about and reflecting on the important role they can play in preparing people with dementia and families for the latter stage of their illness including its terminal , end of life phase; resources will be shared to assist in providing a person centred approach to palliative end of life dementia care.

Learning objectives (Learners will have the opportunity to learn and reflect on):

  • The facts of dementia and how a palliative approach can be beneficial.
  • The common feelings and misinformation that families typically have regarding death from dementia.
  • The grief and loss that staff feel when working with people with dementia as well as the grief that families experience throughout the course of the dementia.
  • Strategies and resources to support health care providers in their work with individuals and families in end of life dementia care.
