Despite progress in recent years, significant gaps remain in access to hospice palliative care across Canada. Many people continue to face barriers to receiving a palliative approach to care due to geography, diagnosis, housing instability, cultural factors, and other systemic challenges. While awareness of palliative care has increased, misunderstandings remain, and many people still receive care far too late in their illness trajectory.

In response to these challenges, the Palliative Care Coalition of Canada (PCCC) released the Blueprint for Action 2025–2030, a national roadmap that identifies key priorities needed to ensure that more people in Canada have access to high-quality, culturally safer, and affordable palliative care.

Yet advancing these priorities requires more than a policy framework. It also requires individuals, organizations, and communities to engage in conversations with decision-makers and advocate for change. Many professionals and organizations working in hospice palliative care recognize the importance of advocacy but are uncertain about how to engage governments or how to identify meaningful opportunities to influence policy.

This webinar will introduce participants to the Blueprint for Action and explore different types of advocacy and government engagement we can take to help move its priorities forward. Drawing on real advocacy experience from national organizations involved in the Coalition, the session will also demystify how government relations work in practice, including who makes key decisions, when engagement can be most effective, and where advocates can have the greatest impact.

Through discussion and examples drawn from current national initiatives, participants will gain practical insight into how advocacy efforts can help improve access to palliative care across Canada.

About the Palliative Care Coalition of Canada

The PCCC – formerly known as the Quality End-of-Life Care Coalition of Canada (QELCCC) – was established in December 2000. That same year, it began work on its first Blueprint for Action. That Blueprint has been revisited and revised twice: in 2009 and 2020. Over the past 24 years, members of the PCCC have worked collaboratively with government and health system partners to first, improve access to palliative care for those nearing the end of life; second – based on research on the broader benefits – improve access to a palliative approach to care for people who are aging or living with serious illness.
