Press Release – CCC and Cambridge Memorial Hospital
December 12, 2018 (Ottawa) – With a clear vision in mind to provide exceptional healthcare by exceptional people to south western Ontarians, the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA)’s Champion’s Council is pleased to announce that the Cambridge Memorial Hospital has received the Canadian Compassionate Companies (CCC) designation.
A recent report from the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHI) reports that family and friends play an essential role in palliative homecare. Almost all 99% of palliative home care clients had family or friends helping to care for them. Today, 1 in 3 caregivers reported distress during this time. We commend the work of family and friends who care for their loved ones while juggling the demands of their own lives and great companies who support their staff during these times.
“As an organization dedicated to offering acute care services to our community, we know the contributions of those providing end-of-life care is both important and deeply meaningful,” said Patrick Gaskin, President and CEO of Cambridge Memorial Hospital. “As such, we are honoured to be the first Canadian hospital with a CCC designation. It shows our staff that we will support them should they need or want to step into the role of caregiver for their loved one.”
Russell Williams, longtime member and Chair of CHPCA’s Champion’s Council offers his congratulations to Cambridge Memorial Hospital: “As a strong supporter of hospice palliative care nationally, we are pleased that a health care provider is joining the commitment to supporting “carers”, which is important for the patient, their family, friends, community – and for Canada in general”.
Formed in 2010, the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA)’s Champion’s Council is comprised of a group of key leaders in Canada who have offered to advance the profile of hospice palliative care across the country. More information on the Canadian Compassionate Company (CCC) designation is available on CHPCA’s website at chpca.net in the accompanying backgrounder.
