The 2002 Award of Excellence in Hospice Palliative Care was presented to a most deserving candidate; Dr. Jose Pereira, an exemplary medical visionary with a passion for advocacy and quality care for all citizens.
He champions quality end-of-life care eagerly both nationally and internationally in populated urban centers and rural communities.
Dr. Pereira actively supports Canadian research and exceptional clinical care, his achievements are many and among them include:
- He developed an on-line palliative care education program called the PALLIUM project that enables rural medical providers access to palliative care best practices and protocol
- Dr. Pereira has published many abstracts, journal articles and books including regular contributions to the Canadian Journal of Palliative Care Medicine and Journal of Pain and Symptom Management
- He chaired the Task Force on the Internet and Technology for the International Association of Hospice Palliative Care and participated as an Advisory Committee Member for the Canadian Virtual Hospice Project
- Caring for patients young and old ensuring dignity and support at the last stages of life
Dr. Pereira is admired by his peers; community and patients as a leader in the hospice palliative care movement in Canada and proves his dedication in classrooms, hospital rooms and boardrooms across the country.
