The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) is publishing its updated position statement on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to reflect new legislation impacting MAiD enacted after June 2019, to improve the clarity of its position, and to update the definition of palliative care adopted by CHPCA.

In the spirit of reconciliation, the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) announces that it will recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th as an annual statutory holiday. Last year, MP Matt Jeneroux introduced Bill-C220 as a private member’s bill—only 2% of these types of bills usually become law. This enactment amends the Canada Labour Code by five unpaid days, which entitles Canadians to extend their bereavement leave—including employees who, at the time a family member dies, are on compassionate care leave or leave related to critical illness in respect of the deceased person.
